KENNY MARTIN

Kenneth J. Martin Jr., 66, of Schumann Rd., Averill Park, died suddenly on Monday, July 14, 2008 at his residence. Born in Troy, Ken was the son of Evelyn Trembly Martin of Speigletown and the late Kenneth J. Martin Sr. and husband of Janie Smith Martin.

Ken was raised in Speigle-town, was a graduate of Catholic Central High School and attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. He had been a successful insurance agent with Allstate Insurance before starting his own insurance agency in Sand Lake 30 years ago.

Ken was an avid horseman and had raised Standardbred Harness horses and was also professionally licensed. Ken had been a Sand Lake town councilman during the 1980s and had served on the town's bicentennial committee. During his time on the town council, he served on the cable TV committee and was proud that cable TV was brought into the town.

Ken was active in local hockey and was instrumental in the formation of the Frear Park Arena and he also helped in the establishment of the Colonie Crusaders and served as manager. Ken was a former Pop Warner Football coach and was a former member of the Sand Lake Kiwanis. Ken was a member of the Glass Lake Association and active with the Sand Lake Historical Society, was a member of the Sandlake Assoc. for the Mutual Protection against Horse Thieves and a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park.

Ken was the brother of the late Marilyn Martin. Survivors in addition to his wife and mother include a daughter, Valerie Martin of Poestenkill; a son, Brett (Kate) Martin of Bradford, Mass.; his brothers, Robert J. Martin of Sand Lake and William J. Martin of Colonie; his stepchildren, Denise Winkleblack of Trumansburg, N.Y., Jackie Rousse of Stillwater and Dennis Keith of Voorheesville; several grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and his beloved Yorkshire terriers.

TROTTINGBRED RACING BEGAN AS THE HOBBY OF PONY HARNESS RACING WAS CATCHING ON IN THE MIDWEST, EAST COAST AND QUEBEC IN THE LATE 1950's.

THE INTENT WAS TO EMULATE THE STANDARDBRED SPORT, NOT THE HORSES. SHETLAND, WELSH AND HACKNEY PONIES RACED A HALF-MILE AT A TROT HOOKED TO SMALL-SCALE SULKIES. THEN, AROUND 1960, THE PONIES BEGAN TO BE CROSSED WITH THE STANDARDBRED TO PRODUCE BETTER COMPETITORS. THIS BREED IS NOW CALLED A "TROTTINGBRED".

AS A RESULT OF THE EARLY INTEREST AND POPULARITY, THE
INTERNATIONAL TROTTING AND PACING ASSOCIATION, CURRENTLY BASED IN SHIPSHEWANA, INDIANA, WAS FORMED IN 1964.

Sunshine Raceway, Dade City Florida

IN THE EARLY DAYS, ANY TROTTING PONY WAS ALLOWED TO RACE, REGARDLESS OF THE BREED, AS LONG AS THE ANIMAL WAS NO TALLER THAN 12.5 HANDS AT THE WITHERS.

THIS HEIGHT LIMIT HAS SINCE BEEN RAISED TO 51 1/2", JUST UNDER 13 HANDS. THE PONIES TROT OR PACE IN MINATURE VERSIONS OF STANDARDBRED HARNESSES, COMPLETE WITH HOBBLES AND HANGERS.

SEVERAL OF THE MAJOR HARNESS RACING TACK OUTFITTERS NOW CARRY LINES OF PRODUCTS TO SUPPORT TROTTINGBRED RACING
RECOGNIZED AS A BREED BY THE AMERICAN HORSE COUNCIL IN 1997, MOST TROTTINGBREDS TODAY APPEAR TO BE MINIATURE STANDARDBREDS, BUT THE CROSS BREEDING OF BIG HORSE WITH LITTLE HAS RESULTED IN AN ANIMAL GENERALLY MORE STURDY THAN THE STANDARDBRED.

TROTTINGBRED RACING IS A FAMILY ORIENTED SPORT WITH DRIVERS RANGING FROM 12 YEARS TO 80+. MOST OWNERS DO THEIR OWN TRAINING.

NO ELABORATE STABLING IS NEEDED AND SOME PONIES ARE EVEN STABLED IN GARAGES AND WORKED ALONG ROADSIDES OR SMALL HOME TRAINING TRACKS.

RACES CONSIST OF 2 1/2 SECOND TIME BARS STARTING WITH THE 2:00 AND SLOWER BAR UP TO A FREE-FOR-ALL LEVEL.

CANADA HAS SEVERAL CLUBS ALONG WITH THEIR OWN HEADQUARTERS. IN 1988 A GROUP OF ITALIAN HORSEMAN BEGAN TO IMPORT TROTTINGBREDS(MAINLY TROTTERS), IN 1990 TROTTINGBREDS MADE THEIR MIGRATION TO BERMUDA, AND, IN 1992 AUSTRALIA ACQUIRED IT'S FIRST BREEDING/RACE STOCK.

THE ALL-TIME RECORD FOR THE PACE AT A HALF MILE IS :59 HELD BY A TROTTINGBRED STALLION NAMED
SHAMROCK SHADY.

A TEN YEAR OLD MARE NAMED
SWEET B LOZARIO FROM INDIANA TRAVELED TO THE MEADOWLANDS, TROTTING THE 1/2 MILE DISTANCE IN :59.2 BECOMING THE WORLDS FASTEST TROTTINGBRED MARE.

HER ACTUAL RACE MARK OF 1:01 ON A HALF MILE TRACK IS SHARED WITH
WILD ROSE AS THE FASTEST TROT MARK FOR THE TROTTINGBRED.

The ITPA is a non-profit organization created to afford owners of Trottingbred Horses an opportunity to join in the promotion of harness racing as a performance activity, creating a much needed increased spectator participation, and consequent marketing opportunity for the breed.

ITPA is an "open" registry with a maximum height limit of 51 1/2".
